Don’t Tell Me Your New Year’s Resolution: Here’s Why…

Don’t tell me your New Year’s Resolution: Here’s why

I’m not interested in hearing about your New Year’s Resolutions. I’m not interested in your vision for building your empire either.Don’t tell me your New Year’s Resolution: Here’s why

Without consistent, focused action, it’s just talk. It’s just dreams. Fantasy. And I’m bored. Dreamers are a dime a dozen (even with inflation).

If yesterday’s commitments are still unkept, if today’s work still hasn’t been started – don’t talk to me about tomorrow. You are just embarrassing yourself.

(This is where my wife pulls me aside and says, “Christian, you might tone that back a bit.”)

But that’s also where I remind her that, unlike her, I’m not a therapist. I work with leaders. Or at least people in the position of leadership.

My job isn’t to get leaders to decide and act like normal people. Leaders, or at least effective ones, aren’t normal. And they don’t act like it.

Most people, normal people, hope for things to be different. Leaders build something different.

Let Me Go Back a Bit

The truth is, I love talking about vision. One of my favorite things about my job is that I get to work with leaders who see and do big things.

My wife knows that one of my favorite date nights is when we go out and plan the coming year. It’s when she speaks my love language: Plans. (It’s not one of her favorite things. We aren’t weird. It’s just me.)

Part of the most romantic of date nights (in my mind) is when we review the progress we’ve made towards last year’s goals. That’s hot.

It’s a way of staying accountable. Usually, it is encouraging. Sometimes, it is challenging. Either way, doing this helps us accomplish our goals and it also helps us grow together.

All of that to say, the plan goes into action. Otherwise, what is the point? My wife doesn’t like planning. She does like it when we hit goals.

Vision vs Nonsense

Recently I watched a video of a 91-year-old man who was cranking out reps in a gym. He was legit. He was using free weights. And they were heavy. The numbers he was putting up in a normal workout were better than a lot of guys 70 years his junior.

Hold that image…I’ll come back to it.

Vision is important. In fact, without the ability to inspire a shared vision in others, a leader will never lead much.

But…that same leader needs to deliver. They need to make the vision become real.

I have a vision of being 91 years old and still being active and fit.

There is one good way to get there: Putting in the reps now. Putting in the reps tomorrow. Keep putting in reps until I’m 91.

That’s what that old-timer did. I don’t know what his vision was. But his 91-year-old reality is the result of what he does every day.

In summary…consistent steps, regular work, incremental gains, always showing up and making it happen.

That’s what builds visions.

Show Me Your Training Log, I’ll Tell You Your Future

In athletics and fitness, anyone training with intent will keep a training log. I’ve kept one for years. It maps out my plan to hit my goals. On a daily basis, I track my progress and efforts to stay consistent with my plan.

There is a lot of value and tons to be learned from training logs. But most important is the discipline to just keep showing up.

It’s the same for your organization.

Keep showing up, keep putting in the reps. Chances are high that someday you will find that your vision has become your reality.

Create a fantastic year,

Christian
