Imagine shaping your leadership skills with the same precision and dedication as an elite athlete preparing for their peak performance.

This concept lies at the heart of my new book, Train to Lead. Drawing from my extensive background as an athlete and a seasoned strength and conditioning instructor, this book offers a groundbreaking approach to leadership development, mirroring the proven principles of athletic training.

From the Gym to the Boardroom: A Unique Blend of Expertise

My journey in athletics, spanning decades, has been instrumental in shaping the approach of Train to Lead. As someone who has trained athletes and tactical professionals (military, firefighters, police), I’ve seen firsthand how focused, structured training can lead to extraordinary results. This book is a culmination of these insights, adapted meticulously for leadership development.

Why Train to Lead Stands Out

In my 35 years in leadership roles and over two decades of consulting and coaching leaders, I’ve encountered the limitations of conventional leadership literature. Most books scatter their focus across so many topics that the reader doesn’t know where to start. Or they drill down so narrowly on a single aspect that context is lost. Both result in producing good information that is difficult to apply. Train to Lead transcends these categories, offering a balanced, phased, and progressive training regimen for leaders that mirrors the preparation of top athletes.

The Core of Train to Lead: Periodization in Leadership

Just as athletes undergo different training phases, leaders will benefit from a similar approach. Consider the elements of a well-designed training cycle for athletes and their leadership equivalents:

1. Healthy Habits & Nutrition: Just as athletes need to eat and sleep well, leaders must establish key mindsets and routines. I introduce the readers to four foundational mindsets & habits.

2. Conditioning: Athletes prepare their bodies and minds for the stress of training; leaders must similarly develop self-management skills. Train to Lead identifies the four critical areas of self-mastery for leaders.

3. Strength: The ability to exert force and create movement is the basis of athleticism; leaders must similarly learn how to move the energy and focus of those they lead. In this book, I describe the five practices of exemplary leadership.

4. Power: In sports, power is the ability to harness strength quickly to generate momentum or suddenly change direction. In leadership, it’s about making bold, impactful decisions, especially in three common leadership situations.

5. Endurance & Recovery: Just as athletes learn to sustain their efforts and take care of themselves over time, leaders need to sustain their energy without getting burned out over the long haul. I illustrate the five keys to sustained leadership effectiveness.

Each phase is detailed with practical exercises and strategies, inspired by my experience in athletic training, ensuring a robust and applicable leadership development journey.
